New Home for Veterans Opens in North Carolina

North Carolina veteran housing

Recently, state and city officials gathered for the grand opening of the new N.C. State Veterans Home in Black Mountain. The facility aims at providing long-term healthcare for U.S. military veterans.

“We always like to say that North Carolina is the most military-friendly state in the nation and it really shows with the opening of the new N.C. State Veterans Home in Black Mountain,” said Gov. Perdue. “This is how we show appreciation to those who served and sacrificed to make our state and country a better, safer place to live and prosper.”

The facility, which has 100 beds total, provides residents with their own rooms and bathrooms. These rooms are grouped into “neighborhoods” of 12-14 residents who share a common area complete with dining room, large-screen TV and courtyard.

In addition to these housing facilities, residents also receive skilled nursing care and a state-of-the-art therapy center.

The N.C. State Veterans Home program provides skilled care services to qualifying North Carolina veterans. Currently, about 765,900 veterans live in the state, and approximately 100,000 of those reside in the western portion of the state.

The State Veterans Home program is a fully receipt-based operation. Homes operate on funds from private pay, Medicaid/Medicare, Veterans Affairs pension and/or per diem, and other sources such as gifts and donations. The N.C. Division of Veterans Affairs, which is part of the N.C. Department of Administration, employs a private provider to manage the facility. North Carolina currently operates two other facilities, a 150-bed facility in Fayetteville, and a 99-bed in Salisbury. A fourth facility in Kinston is scheduled to be completed in early 2013.

Winston-Salem Named As Top 10 Cheapest US City

Cheapest US cities

Even though home prices may be low, buyers still have to consider the cost of living for the region they want to move to. To help buyers out, Kiplinger recently released their list of the top 10 cheapest U.S. cities to live in based on research from the Council for Community and Economic Research. Making the list at number 10 was our very own popular Carolina real estate destination, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Winston-Salem is the most budget-friendly big city within the Tar Heel State, with Raleigh coming in at second. The cost of living index is a 87.5, which means it is around 13 points below the national average. The median household income is below the national average at $41,483, but the average home price is also well below the national average at $199,118. In addition, renting an apartment typically costs around $590 a month. Two of the most popular and biggest employers for the area are Wake Forest University and Reynolds American.

If you’re considering purchasing a new home in either South Carolina or North Carolina, Winston-Salem is the only big city to make Kiplinger’s list of cheapest cities for either state.

Raleigh Remains Atop Best Cities for Jobs List

Raleigh is #2 on the List of the Best Performing Cities

Raleigh recently found itself ranking seventh in New Geography‘s annual survey of the best places for jobs. This marks the seventh year in a row that Raleigh ranked within the top 15 cities.

Raleigh is one of the cities that benefits from the nationwide tech growth trend. Other cities benefiting from technology are Austin, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Denver. Other major contributing factors for many cities’ rankings include the energy sector, government-dependence, military towns, manufacturing and the housing bubble. Additionally, for the first time since the recession, 2011 saw more growth in private sector employment than in the public sector.

The list is created by ranking all 398 current metropolitan statistical areas based on employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics from November 200 to January 2012. These rankings are calculated based on recent growth trends, mid-term growth, long-term growth and the region’s momentum. The rankings are also broken down by size since regional economies differently due to their scale.

An increasing number of jobs and Raleigh’s ranking on this list will only serve to boost home sales in this region. For more information on North Carolina real estate, visit our site.
